Study highlights lack of transparency in generator, grid performance across the South during Winter Storm Elliott

From December 21-26, 2022, Winter Storm Elliott tested the South's power grid resilience under extremely cold conditions when electricity demand was very high across the region. The Southern Renewable Energy Association (SREA) commissioned Telos Energy to review performance within the Southern Company footprint during Winter Storm Elliott to identify lessons learned moving forward.

This study shows that thermal generators like gas, coal and nuclear significantly underperformed during Winter Storm Elliott. Gas and coal resources experienced correlated outages within Southern Company's territory, and across the Eastern Interconnect, the Farley Unit 1 nuclear reactor in Alabama was mostly unavailable due to extended outages. Solar performed well during the event's period of peak demand.
